Did You Know?
- Boer goats are the most numerous and popular breed of goats in the U.S. The Boer breed was developed in South Africa by Dutch farmers.
-Texas, California, Oklahoma, and Tennessee have the greatest number of Boers, accounting for 49% of the 2,500,000 meat goats in the nation. The first Boers were imported in 1993 through Canada from New Zealand and Australia. Later imports came directly from South African breeders.
- 70% of people in the world eat goat meat (chevon), and even more would eat it if it was available to them. Goat meat in Spanish is cabrito.
-The U.S.A. is home to only 2/10 (.2 %) of the world's goats.
- Goats are one of the earliest domesticated animal breeds, having been associated with humans for over 10,000 years.
-Goat meat has more lean, more protein, fewer calories and less fat than the meat from cattle, sheep, chicken or hogs.
-About 60% of the goat meat consumed in the U.S. is imported from Australia & New Zealand. It is estimated that the U.S. would require 15 million meat goat does to meet the current U.S. demand for chevon (goat meat).
-The number of meat goats (primarily Boers) in Michigan has increased 48% in the last 4 years! Goats are becoming more and more popular as 4-H projects and as hobby farm animals. Michigan is one of the nation's fastest-growing states for goats.
